Products Description
Coace® W1L-2 is a maleic anhydride functionalized polyethylene with highgrafting rate. It is in granule form.
One of the most difficult problems in producing high-performance WPC products is generating strong interfacial adhesion between the hydrophilic wood fibers and the hydrophobic polymer matrix. This interface is crucial for ensuring efficient stress transmission and maximizing the final composite’s mechanical, thermal, and weathering properties. Our maleic anhydride functionalized coupling agent was developed specifically to address this issue and improve the compatibility of wood and plastic in WPC formulations.
Our maleic anhydride functionalized polyethylene coupling agent is a versatile and effective option for increasing the compatibility and performance of wood-plastic composites. It significantly improves mechanical characteristics, weatherability, and sustainability by forming strong interfacial adhesion between the wood fibers and polymer matrix. We welcome the opportunity to work with customers and assist them maximize the potential of their WPC materials.

- Maleic Anhydride Functionality:Our coupling agent is composed of a polyethylene polymer grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH) functional groups. These cyclic anhydride moieties are extremely reactive and can create covalent connections with the hydroxyl groups on the surface of wood fibers. This establishes a strong physical and chemical bond between the polymer and the wood, significantly increasing interfacial adhesion.
- Improved mechanical properties:By improving the wood-plastic interface, our MAH-grafted polyethylene coupling agent directly improves the mechanical performance of WPCs. We observed up to 30% gains in tensile strength, flexural modulus, and impact resistance as compared to unaltered WPC formulations. The improved stress transfer allows the wood fibers to better strengthen the polymer matrix.
- Enhanced weatherability:Outdoor applications expose the wood component of WPCs to UV light, moisture, and other environmental variables that might degrade it. Our maleic anhydride coupling agent reduces weathering by forming a more robust surface that protects the wood fibers. This improves the long-term color and dimensional stability of WPC products.
Advantage
Broad Compatibility:Our coupling agent’s polyethylene backbone is very compatible with a wide range of thermoplastic resins widely used in WPC manufacturing, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and PVC. This adaptability enables the same coupling agent to be utilized across numerous WPC product lines and formulations.
Customization and Tech Support:To satisfy our customers’ individual needs, we provide the option to alter the properties of our maleic anhydride functionalized coupling agent. To improve performance for a specific WPC formulation and end-use application, adjustments can be made to the PE base polymer, MAH grafting amount, molecular weight, and other parameters.
Our polymer scientists and application engineers are also accessible to provide technical assistance throughout the development, testing, and implementation phases. We collaborate extensively with customers to guarantee that our coupling agent integrates seamlessly and achieves the anticipated improvements in mechanical, weathering, and overall WPC performance.
Sustainability and Circular Economy:In addition to its technological advantages, our MAH-grafted polyethylene coupling agent promotes sustainability and the shift to a more circular economy. Polyethylene is a naturally recyclable polymer, and the coupling agent may be efficiently recycled alongside WPC waste streams.
This circularity reduces plastic waste, lowers carbon footprints, and allows for the reuse of precious material resources. As customers and regulatory authorities become more environmentally sensitive, our coupling agent’s sustainability features make it an increasingly appealing alternative for WPC makers.
