Glycidyl Methacrylate, or GMA for short, is a monomer having epoxy groups and double acrylate linkages. Due to their high reactivity, acrylate double bonds can self-polymerise and copolymerize with a variety of different monomers.
Epoxy groups can interact with hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl, or acid anhydrides to introduce additional functional groups and increase the usefulness of products. GMA is frequently employed as a reactive diluent for epoxy resins, a stabilizer for vinyl chloride, a modifier for rubber and resins, an ion exchange resin, and a binder for printing inks due to the unique nature of its molecular structure.
As a result, GMA is frequently used in the production of chemical fiber, paper, printing, and dyes, composite materials, UV-curable materials, coatings, adhesives, leather, and other products.
Free radical polymerization is a modification technique called “polymer graft modification” that adds polar or functional side groups to the polymer chain. The polymer has exceptionally high polarity or a unique functional group after graft modification, which may enhance the polymer’s adhesion and printability and be utilized as a compatibilizer, a toughener, and diverse functional materials.

From the above table, adding 5% W5D in the PBT fiber system can improve the notched impact strength and preserve other properties well. The results show that W5D has superior processability and high fluidity in the PBT fiber system can help the glass fiber to disperse better.

Modification of polymer graft effects

Effect of flame retardants
- Through grafting chemical process, flame-retardant elements or groups are added to the polymer’s main chain or side chain, transforming the polymer into an intrinsic flame-retardant resin. For instance, adding boron, silicon, sulfur, metal, etc. to the resin can increase its ability to resist flame.
- The compatibilizer’s functionTo increase the resin’s compatibility with other polymers, reactive functional groups are added by the chemical process of grafting. It serves as a polymer alloy compatibilizer. A common HDPE/PA compatibilizer is polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride.
- A toughening agent’s function
Although many elastomers have a good toughening effect, it is challenging to exert the required toughening impact due to their poor compatibility with the toughening matrix resin. This type of elastomer’s compatibility with the toughening matrix resin and toughening performance may both be significantly enhanced after graft modification treatment. If maleic anhydride is used for graft modification to create POE-g-MAH, it improves the compatibility with PA and becomes the best toughening agent for PA.Another illustration is the overall toughening impact of pure SEBS on PET and PBT, which is similarly due to the two materials’ poor compatibility. Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) is a great toughening agent for PET and PBT when it is utilized for graft modification to create SEBS-g-GMA.
